Preparing for a Hedge Fund Operational Due Diligence onsite meeting – Masters Level – London (May 15-16, 2019)

Class begins with lectures and hands-on review of fund documents and materials. The students will work in groups to dissect and evaluate offering documents, regulatory filings and marketing material in addition to reviewing due diligence questionnaires and fund management information in order to be properly prepared to conduct an onsite due diligence meeting.


This class is a component of the Hedge Fund Operational Due Diligence Master’s Level Certificate


Prerequisite knowledge:

  • A deep and thorough background in the financial markets and securities
  • A complete understanding of financial products including; hedge funds, private equity and separate account platforms
  • Strong knowledge and experience working with financial statements
  • Knowledge and understanding of investment strategies


Preparing for an initial ODD onsite meeting (Day 1)

Module 1 – Documents to be collected and reviewed prior to an Onsite Meeting

  • A Deep Dive into a fund’s PPM and IMA
  • Review and Verification of all “Mems & Arts” documentation
  • Understanding the Pros and Cons of the Fund’s Structure
  • Digging into background checks and critical employee attrition
  • Compiling the list of initial Follow up and Flagged items
  • Case Studies


Module 2 – Breaking down a fund’s DDQ

  • Disassembling a fund’s DDQ responses
  • What did the Fund fail to include in their DDQ?
  • Are the fund’s service providers consistent with their Strategy?
  • What do the fund’s counterparties tell us about the fund’s operations?
  • Triangulating between DDQ and additional documentation (PPM, Marketing Materials, Operations Manual, Compliance Policies etc.)
  • Conducting LP reference checks and verifications
  • Flagged items for review
  • Case Studies

  • Conducting a Background Search (Registered entities, political contributions, registered reps)
  • Foreign Regulatory search tools

Module 4 – Audited Financials Review and Verification

  • Breaking down a fund’s AFS
  • Consistency on Expenses between the AFS, the PPM, and the IMA
  • Comparing the AFS to Administrator’s Transparency Reports
  • ASC 820, leveling and valuation overview
  • Red Flags
  • Case Studies
